Yes, Walt Disney World Resort officially opened on October 1, 1971, nearly five years after Walt Disney passed away in December 1966. After Walt's death, many feared the massive "Florida Project" would be abandoned, but his brother, Roy O. Disney, delayed his own retirement to oversee the construction and ensure Walt's vision was realized. Roy famously insisted that the resort be named "Walt Disney World" rather than just "Disney World," so that everyone would know it was his brother's dream. Roy's leadership was instrumental in the completion of the Magic Kingdom and the Contemporary and Polynesian Village Resorts. Sadly, Roy passed away just three months after the park's opening, in December 1971. The "Partners Statue" in the Magic Kingdom, which depicts Walt and Mickey holding hands, serves as a permanent tribute to the man who conceived the "Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow" (EPCOT) and the "Vacation Kingdom of the World," even though he never got to see a single guest walk down Main Street, U.S.A.
