The Park was founded in 1961 by R.B. Coburn, who was originally from Virginia, but later moved to Maggie Valley. Ghost Town in the Sky was a huge success in the 60s, but later struggled, causing some to refer to it as the cursed amusement park.. The park closed in 2009, and has not re-opened since.
