Just as they thrive in small, roadside motels, bed bugs can also show up in five-star hotels and resorts, and even in the cleanest of rooms.

The top three places where pest professionals report finding bed bugs are single-family homes (91 percent), apartments/condominiums (89 percent), and hotels/motels (68 percent).
Bedbugs can be found worldwide, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and are not a reflection on the cleanliness of any accommodation (so, yes, even a five-star hotel can have bedbugs).
“It may surprise you that bed bugs are a common problem in hotels,” says Jordan Foster, Pest Management Expert at Fantastic Pest Control. “Infestations of bed bugs have nothing to do with sanitation or cleanliness. Bed bugs are not uncommon in hotels or motels of any star rating, from one-star to five-star.”
Some people think that bed bugs are no more common in hotel rooms or vacation rentals than anywhere else. According to recent NPMA data, however, 80% of pest control companies surveyed reported that they had treated hotels and/or motels for bed bugs infestations within the past year.
Most hotels also take the time to educate their staff on bed bug protocol. The hotel or a pest control service may offer a training course in order to ensure everyone on staff is certified. With a trained and vigilant staff, hotels are equipped to stop any potential bed bug infestations before guests are affected.
Any luggage items such as toiletries, shoes, or jewelry that cannot be washed, should stay isolated outdoors until they can be carefully inspected and treated. To kill bed bugs with heat, place items in a plastic bag in a hot, sunny location and raise temps to 120 degrees for an hour or more.
