Do airlines change flights for free?

The cost of changing a flight will depend on the particular airline you're booked with and which fare class you purchased. Many airlines have currently waived change fees for economy fares and higher, but still require change fees for basic economy fares.

As of March 2026, many aviation authorities, including the DGCA in India, have implemented a "40-hour or 48-hour look-in option" that allows passengers to change or cancel a flight for free within 48 hours of booking, provided the flight is at least 7 days away (domestic) or 15 days (international). Outside of this window, whether a change is free depends on your fare class. "Basic Economy" tickets typically do not allow free changes, while standard Economy and Business Class tickets often allow for one-time changes without a "change fee," though you must still pay the difference in fare if the new flight is more expensive. If the airline initiates the change (e.g., a flight delay or cancellation), you are almost always entitled to a free rebooking or a full refund regardless of your ticket type.
