Do any Disneyland rides go backwards?

Expedition Everest was the first Disney attraction designed to have their ride vehicles travel both forward AND backward.

In 2026, both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure feature several attractions that incorporate backward motion to enhance the storytelling and thrill level. The most iconic "backward" experience is on Indiana Jones Adventure, where the transport vehicle frequently reverses to escape falling boulders or collapsing ceilings. Over at California Adventure, the Incredicoaster features a mid-ride segment with high-speed dynamic movement, though it is primarily a forward coaster. However, the "king" of backward motion is Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, where the "gantry lift" drops and rises in a randomized, gravity-defying sequence that includes stomach-churning backward-tilting sensations. Additionally, the Radiator Springs Racers vehicles often incorporate subtle reversing maneuvers during the "indoor" story segments before the big outdoor race. For 2026 guests, a "pro-tip" is to keep your head against the headrest during these transitions; the sudden shifts in direction are designed to be "surprising," and maintaining proper posture helps prevent the "neck-jarring" sensation that can occur when the ride vehicle unexpectedly switches its direction of travel.
