Bananas are a cornerstone of the BRAT diet (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast), which has been recommended for decades to help manage diarrhea and upset stomachs. Bananas are particularly effective because they are "bland" and easy to digest, making them less likely to irritate the intestinal lining. More importantly, they are high in pectin, a type of soluble fiber that helps absorb excess liquid in the intestines and "bulks up" the stool. They are also rich in potassium, which is a vital electrolyte that is rapidly lost during bouts of diarrhea; replenishing potassium helps prevent dehydration and muscle weakness. While they are excellent for firming up stools, they should be eaten when ripe but not overripe, as very brown bananas have a higher sugar content which can occasionally worsen symptoms for some. Bananas serve as a natural, safe way to provide the body with energy and essential minerals during recovery without putting undue stress on the digestive tract.
