There are plenty of ways to keep your Hilton points from expiring. Examples of eligible activity include spending on the Hilton credit card, transferring points from another program to Hilton or shopping through the Hilton shopping portal.
If you don't plan on staying at Hilton properties at least once per year, it's not worth obtaining Gold or Diamond status, even if you're just getting it through a credit card. It may also not be worth it if you typically stay at limited-service properties where upgrades are unlikely and breakfast is free to all.
