Do I need a vignette to drive in Germany?

You don't need a vignette in Germany. But for most of the cities you will need an environmental sticker. This sticker is also needed for foreigners! You can order one before going on your trip and don't get fined entering the first German city on your trip.

In 2026, you do not need a vignette to drive a standard passenger car (under 7.5 tonnes) on German motorways (Autobahns). Germany famously remains one of the few European countries where passenger car travel on the highway network is largely free of charge. However, there are two major exceptions. First, trucks and heavy vehicles over 7.5 tonnes must pay a distance-based toll (Maut) tracked via an on-board unit or manual booking. Second, many German cities have Environmental Zones (Umweltzone). To enter these city centers, you must display a green Fine Particulate Matter Sticker (Feinstaubplakette) on your windshield, which certifies your car's emissions standard. While not a "vignette" for road use, failing to have this sticker in a designated zone can result in a fine. If you are crossing into neighboring countries like Austria or Switzerland, you will need to purchase their specific vignettes immediately upon crossing the border to avoid heavy penalties.
