Do I need a vignette to go to Austria?

You must display the sticker on the inside of the windshield of your vehicle as you enter Austria. Please note, the vignette must be stuck to your windshield in order to be valid. Failure to do so will mean a heavy, on-the-spot fine.

Yes, if you plan to drive on Austria’s motorways (Autobahnen) or expressways (Schnellstraßen) in 2026, you must have a valid vignette. For vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, you can choose between a traditional physical sticker or a Digital Vignette. As of 2026, the price for a 10-day vignette is €12.80, and a 1-day vignette (digital only) is €9.60. A critical warning for 2026: if you buy a Digital Annual or 2-month vignette online from the ASFINAG webshop, it is not valid for 18 days due to consumer protection laws. However, 1-day and 10-day digital vignettes are now available for immediate use if purchased through authorized vendors or the app. Failure to display a vignette or have your license plate registered results in a "substitute toll" (fine) of approximately €120, which is strictly enforced via automated camera systems.
