Do I need hiking boots for Canyonlands?

Hiking shoes: If you'll be visiting in the wintertime, some of Canyonlands' hikes, especially on rocky surfaces, can get quite icy, so I'd recommend bringing proper hiking boots (I've used these Merrell's for years and men's equivalent can be found here).

Personally I think that hiking boots are required in Arches National Park. The trails are rough and uneven and there are places where you do need to climb over rocks, so if you want to do some of the longer and more difficult hikes it is best to have good footwear with you.

If you're not a frequent hiker and only go on easy, flat hikes, you can stick with your sneakers or tennis shoes. However, if you go hiking regularly and often hike trails that have hills, rocks, and uneven surfaces, you're better off investing on a pair of good quality hiking boots.

This does not mean you should not visit Canyonlands, but you may want to spend more time in Arches than Canyonlands if you are short on time. We would also agree that Arches is a better visit, but if you want to explore the wilderness by 4×4, then Canyonlands is a better option.

It would take days, weeks even, to fully explore all that Canyonlands has to offer. However, if you only have one day in Canyonlands, you have just enough time to visit the highlights. There are several different areas of Canyonlands National Park.

If you have two days to spare, take one day to explore Island in the Sky and the other for the Needles District. Much of Canyonlands is only suitable for 4x4 vehicles. These four-wheel-drive roads start at an intermediate difficulty and range to extremely technical.

Versatility. While running shoes may not provide the same level of ankle support as hiking boots, they are often more versatile. A running shoe can be used both on trail and off trail, which favours a hiker who prefers a shoe that can do it all.

Running shoes, sport sandals, or hiking boots are ideal. Flip flops, high heels, or new shoes that you're still breaking in are not. If you're planning on hiking into the Canyon, wear a mid-weight boot with lots of ankle support. For the Rim trail, a running shoe with good tread will do the job.
