Whether you need to collect your luggage during transit depends primarily on your itinerary and the country's customs laws. If you booked your entire trip on a single ticket (one PNR), your bags are usually "checked through" to your final destination, and you won't see them until you arrive. However, there are two major exceptions: 1) If you are entering the United States or several other countries as your first point of entry, you must often collect your bags to clear customs before dropping them back on a transfer belt. 2) If you booked separate tickets on different airlines that don't have an interline agreement, you will likely need to exit the secure area, collect your bags, and check them in again for your next flight. Always confirm at the check-in counter for your first flight to be 100% certain.
