Do I need to put my middle name on my airline ticket Ryanair?

For security reasons, the first name and surname on your booking must match the names on your travel document(s). We do not require middle name or second/double-barrelled surnames for flights. For information on how to change a name on your booking, please visit our Name Change FAQs here.

For Ryanair flights in 2026, it is generally not necessary to include your middle name on your ticket, provided your first and last names exactly match your passport or ID. Ryanair’s booking system typically only requires a "First Name" and "Last Name." As long as these primary identifiers are correct, you will not be denied boarding. However, when you perform the online check-in (which is mandatory for Ryanair to avoid steep airport fees), you must enter your "Advanced Passenger Information" (APIS). At this stage, you should enter your full name exactly as it appears in the "Machine Readable Zone" at the bottom of your passport, which will include your middle names. If you made a minor spelling mistake in your name, Ryanair allows a 24-hour grace period after booking to correct it for free; after that, they charge a significant name-change fee (often around £115/€115). To be safe, always stick to the first and last name for the ticket, but be meticulous with the full details during the digital check-in process.

What's really happening is that airlines want to control their revenue. In the days when you could transfer tickets, consolidators would scoop up the cheap ones and resell them, negating the airline's ability to move the ticket price around as demand ebbed and flowed.

Security: One of the primary reasons airlines restrict name changes is security. Verifying the identity of passengers is crucial for safety and compliance with international regulations. Allowing frequent name changes could potentially create opportunities for misuse, fraud, or unauthorized persons boarding flights.
