Do speed cameras flash once or twice?

Average speed cameras do not have a flash. They use infrared illuminators so that they can read your number plate as you go past, even when it is dark. These are on all the time, but the human eye cannot see IR wavelengths. The speed is calculated afterwards from the time it takes you to pass between sets of cameras.
