Do they smoke real cigarette in movies?

What's in prop cigarettes? Today, actors usually approximate smoking onscreen with prop movie cigarettes, or cigarettes that don't contain tobacco or nicotine. These herbal cigarettes usually contain marshmallow root, passion flower, cloves, or jasmine.

In 2026, it is extremely rare for actors to smoke real tobacco cigarettes on film sets. Due to strict labor laws, health and safety regulations, and the sheer number of "takes" required for a single scene, actors almost exclusively use herbal cigarettes. These are tobacco-free and nicotine-free, often made from a blend of marshmallow leaf, honeyrose, or red clover. Real cigarettes would cause nicotine poisoning, headaches, and nausea if an actor had to smoke ten of them for multiple camera angles. Furthermore, the second-hand smoke from real tobacco would affect the entire crew, leading to union complaints. Herbal cigarettes still produce real smoke and ash, making them look authentic on camera, though actors often complain about their distinct, "burning-potpourri" smell. For productions that want to avoid smoke altogether, especially on "green screen" sets, CGI smoke or electronic "prop" cigarettes are used. Some actors who are smokers in real life occasionally insist on real cigarettes for "authenticity," but they usually have to sign specific waivers and ensure the set has specialized ventilation to comply with modern 2026 workplace safety standards.
