For those of us used to traveling by plane, especially on budget airlines, Amtrak's baggage policy can seem incredibly generous. Amtrak passengers can take two personal items, two carry-on bags, and two checked bags onboard for free.

Stand back: Always stay behind the yellow lines at train stations. Enter or exit a station platform at designated areas. Stay off the tracks: Train tracks, bridges and yards are private property. Never walk, bike, skateboard or run on or along the tracks; it's illegal and dangerous.
Checked baggage service is available at a number of our stations and on many trains and Thruway Services. Not all trains or locations are equipped to handle checked baggage. Before you travel, make sure to check and see if your train and origin and destination stations accept checked baggage.

The real luxury item for the train is an electric water heater. The cafe will usually give you free hot water, but this makes things so much easier. I plug it in at whatever table I'm at in the observation car, and then all day I make instant coffee, tea, oatmeal, instant soup, whatever just needs water. It's amazing.
Train travel is much simpler, as there is no TSA PreCheck® or CLEAR equivalent for Amtrak. Amtrak trains offer private rooms, more legroom, more space from your fellow passengers, more comfortable seats, and more food & beverage options.
