Do you need a car in Saint Croix?

If coming to St. Croix definitely rent a car. If you get a jeep, do not leave anything in it and leave it open. Centerline is a good outfit to rent from.

A full-service bus line operates throughout St. Croix. Taxi and Jeep services are readily available. Most taxi drivers are able to provide their passengers with comprehensive tours of their island.

Walking, taxi or a rental car are the three options for transportation in Saint Croix. The largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, 28 miles long and 7 miles wide. Choosing to rent a car during our stay, which I highly recommend, allowed us freedom to set our own time schedule and explore the entire island.

Public buses, VITRAN, do operate on St. Croix. Expect to pay about $1.00. Hours of operation are 5:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. 7 days a week.

Public Transportation The Vitran Bus System services various areas of the island and usually runs Monday - Friday. Vitran buses run along Centerline Road. The buses travel from the Cruz Bay ferry dock, through to Coral Bay, Salt Pond Bay and back to Cruz Bay.

Renting a car while visiting our islands is the best way to explore. Just remember to drive on the left side of the road! Speed limits will vary on the islands, so take your time and enjoy the views.

St Croix has no more of a crime problem than any other tourist destination. That is not to say there is no crime on the island, of course, St. Croix, like anywhere, is not crime free, so just take normal precautions. Almost 100% of the crime is locals against locals.

To avoid collisions on hairpin turns in hilly and mountainous areas, it is recommended that you stay as far left as possible and slow down to about 10 mph. St. Croix has a lot of winding roads, some with potholes and many with low lighting at night.

Thomas, the most developed, is brimming with activities and world-class shopping. St. Croix, bigger but sleepier, is the place to go for diving, snorkeling, and beach life. Both extend a warm welcome and both have interesting culture away from the beach.

The east end of the beach is the best for swimming, the west end has great snorkeling.
