Some attractions, especially coasters, have a small net pocket on the back of the seat in front of you for storing your bag. Rock-n-Roller Coaster is one example of an attraction that uses this method. With this attraction, you would not be able to fit a large backpack in the net, but you could fit a small purse.
As many have answered above, some rides you can not have any loose items including a shoulder bag. There are lockers provided, which are free for a couple of hours, but mind you they are quite small, a typical cubicle, so I recommend bringing only a small bag.

So even if a park doesn't make you go through metal detectors at a coaster's queue, stow the phone anyway. And that means leaving it at the station, in a locker, or at the very least inside a closed pocket where it can't fly out during the ride. That goes for anything you're carrying with you in the park, too.
