Do you need to bring your passport if you are staying in Salzburg for a few days and you are taking day trips via train into Germany? You don't NEED a passport for travel between Schengen countries, of which both Germany, Austria and several others are members.

You would be better off keeping it in Munich. You have to take the passport with you. That there are no (regular) border controls does not mean that you can cross borders without passport. If you go without passport you're entering Austria illegally.
