Aboard the train. On board, you do not tip the conductor or the crew operating the train. Even in coach, however, there will be a car attendant who cleans up and keeps coffee and tea available, and so if you are on board the whole day, most people will offer the attendant at least a few dollars.

Is first class at the front of the train? In the US there's no set assignment. With Amtrak, it depends on the route: Florida trains tend to have the sleepers at the back of the train, while the Pennsylvanian has it's first class car in the front.

The best place to sit in Amtrak Coach Class is on the upper level. It's all about the view on the upper level. This is the biggest advantage of sitting in the upper level. You can also move from car to car more freely as there is access from each car on the upper level.
