As of 2026, American Airlines no longer sells new lifetime "AAirpass" memberships. The program, which famously offered unlimited first-class travel for a one-time fee of $250,000 in the 1980s, was officially discontinued for new sales in 1994 (with a final brief offer in 2004). In November 2022, American also stopped selling the more recent "prepaid" version of the AirPass. However, for the 66 original pass holders who still possess a lifetime unlimited pass, the airline is legally required to honor their travel rights. The program became a legend in the travel industry because a few "super-users" flew millions of miles a year, costing the airline millions in lost revenue. While you cannot buy your way into "lifetime status" today, the AAdvantage program still rewards its most loyal flyers with "Million Miler" status, where reaching 1 million lifetime miles grants you permanent Gold status, and 2 million miles grants permanent Platinum status, though this does not include free flights.
