Does Amex Platinum get you flight upgrades?

Enjoy complimentary upgrades from Business to First Class when travelling to destinations around the world. Appreciate roomier seats, premium service and more relaxing journeys. Simply use your Platinum Card to purchase an eligible ticket in specified classes.

The American Express Platinum Card does not provide automatic flight upgrades simply by holding the card, but it offers several powerful indirect pathways to upgrades in 2026. Through the International Airline Program (IAP), cardmembers can book premium tickets at significantly discounted rates on over 20 partner airlines. Additionally, the card allows you to transfer "Membership Rewards" points to over a dozen airline loyalty programs, which can then be used to bid for or purchase upgrades. The card also frequently offers "status matches" or elite status tiers with certain partners (such as Gold status with Delta via the Medallion program if linked to specific business spend), which increases your priority on upgrade standby lists. In 2026, many Platinum members also utilize the $200 Airline Fee Credit to cover the cost of upgrading to extra-legroom seats or "Economy Plus" sections during the check-in process on their selected qualifying airline.
