Does Auckland have a subway?

The Auckland CRL is a 3.4 km double-track underground rail line running beneath the central business district from Britomart to the Western (North Auckland) Line near the existing Mount Eden Station, with two new underground stations in the CBD at Aotea and Karangahape.

Auckland does not have a traditional "subway" system, but as of 2026, it is nearing the completion of its first major underground rail project, the City Rail Link (CRL). This 3.5km double-track tunnel runs beneath the central business district, effectively transforming the existing commuter rail network into a modern "metro-style" service. It includes two new underground stations, Te Waihorotiu and Karanga-a-Hape, which are the deepest in New Zealand. While the wider rail network is a surface-level commuter system, the CRL allows for much higher frequency and faster cross-city travel. For most of Auckland, transport still relies heavily on an extensive bus network and ferries, but the CRL marks the city's first true venture into underground urban rail.
