Does Avis not accept Amex?

Avis accepts most major credit cards as credit identification at the time of rental. Accepted credit cards: Avis Charge Card, American Express, AT&T Capital, Diner's Club Intl, Discover, China Union Pay, JCB, MasterCard, and Visa.

This is a common misconception; Avis absolutely accepts American Express (Amex) as a standard form of payment at the vast majority of its locations worldwide. You can use an Amex card to book your rental online and to pay at the counter when you collect the vehicle. In fact, many Amex cards offer premium benefits when used at Avis, such as the "Avis President's Club" status or specific discount codes (AWD). However, some confusion may arise because Avis typically requires a credit card for the security hold; while they accept Amex credit cards, some smaller international franchises or specific "luxury car" tiers may have stricter rules regarding the type of card used. Additionally, while the card is accepted for payment, you must still meet the standard requirements, such as a valid driver's license and meeting the minimum age. If you are renting in a country like Iceland or Canada, you should always check the local counter's specific "debit vs. credit" policy, but for Amex credit cardholders, Avis is a universally compatible partner.
