Base Weight is the weight of everything you are carrying excluding your Consumable Weight and your Worn Weight. If you're carrying a fanny pack or have things in your pockets, these all count towards your Base Weight too.

(If you weigh 150 pounds, your pack should not exceed 30 pounds for backpacking.) A loaded day hiking pack should not weigh more than about 10 percent of your body weight.

Weight distributionIf you are walking, pack the heavy things in the middle and towards the top of the backpack, in the section that is right next to your back. If, on the other hand, you are going skiing, it is smart to place the weight low and towards the back.
Backpacks shift your center of gravity backward a bit, so leaning forward slightly will help you keep balance as you trek. Just enough so that you can easily maintain balance. Too much will cause back strain and the backpack's weight will fall on your back though.
If you step onto the scale while wearing thick clothes and heavy shoes, your weight may show as higher than it truly is. Clothing and shoes can add 2-3 pounds. If you're not comfortable or in a position to weight yourself undressed, be sure to wear the same or similar lightweight outfit for every weigh-in.
