In 2026, all major U.S. airlines (including United, Delta, American, and JetBlue) allow Basic Economy passengers to bring one personal item for free. This item must be able to fit under the seat in front of you—standard dimensions are roughly 17 x 10 x 9 inches. However, the "overhead bin" rules vary significantly: while American and Delta allow a full-sized carry-on bag for Basic Economy, United and JetBlue generally do not. On United, if you bring a full-sized carry-on to the gate with a Basic Economy ticket, you will be charged the standard checked bag fee plus a $65 gate handling fee. For 2026, many carriers have also introduced new "loyalty-based" exceptions; for instance, United MileagePlus cardholders or Premier members can often bring a carry-on for free even when booked in the Basic Economy cabin.
