In February 2026, California is in a major construction phase of the nation's first true high-speed rail system but does not yet have an operational "bullet train" carrying passengers. As of early 2026, the California High-Speed Rail Authority has successfully completed over 80 miles of guideway and 58 structures in the Central Valley, with track installation finally beginning at the Southern Railhead Facility in Kern County this month. The project aims to eventually connect San Francisco to Los Angeles/Anaheim with 220 mph electric trains. While the Initial Operating Segment between Merced and Bakersfield is projected to open in 2032, current travelers can already experience "high-speed" travel (up to 125 mph) on the Brightline West line, which is under construction to link Southern California to Las Vegas by 2028.
