A trip to Disney World in the summer isn't complete without those hour long afternoon thunderstorms. And when that happens, there are a handful of outdoor rides across all four Disney World parks that will close temporarily for safety reasons.
In fact, Disney World sees a lot of lightning strikes, and while there's no such thing as a “safe place” during a lightning storm, Disney World does incorporate the use of lightning rods across its property, and each one is hidden in plain sight.
1) Rides that close during lightning – Cast Members keep a constant eye on the weather radar at Walt Disney World. Unfortunately when lightning strikes within 10 miles of the parks all outdoor rides, including water rides close for the safety of the guests.
Beginning at 7:00 a.m. every day, a Disney Hotel Guest can purchase any available Individual Lightning Lane attraction (see list below) through the My Disney Experience app.
You'll find that most Guests will continue having fun even through the storms, and most rides and attractions will keep running as long as there is no lightning and it is safe to do so. Walt Disney World Resort does not usually refund tickets due to inclement weather.
The rain generally isn't that big of a deal if you don't make it a big deal. In general, Disney World is a 365 day a year operation. It never closes, even for rain, with basically one exception.Hurricanes.
The Disney World Lightning Lane is not free and it is included in the cost of the Disney Genie+ which will range from $15 – $27 per person per day for up to 40 attractions throughout the park. It's important to note that the Disney Lightning Lane did replace the free Disney Fastpass system in the parks.
A notable “exception” is Tower of Terror, which can (ironically) operate through severe weather. With no lightning, its incredibly rare for heavy rain to shut down a ride for very long, if for no other reason than exceptionally heavy rain usually just can't fall that long.

However when you consider that it costs the average guest $11.00 per hour to be inside of any of the Disney World theme parks we feel like the additional cost is worth it as you are receiving an equal amount of time back to enjoy on other Disney World rides.
