King Charles III did indeed inherit Balmoral Castle following the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September 2022. Unlike Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle, which are held by the monarch in right of the Crown (meaning they belong to the office of the sovereign rather than the individual), Balmoral is a private estate. It was originally purchased by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria in 1852 and has been passed down as private property through the generations. In 2026, Balmoral continues to serve as the King's primary private retreat in Scotland. Because it is private property, the King has greater flexibility in how the estate is managed; for instance, in recent years, he has expanded public access to parts of the castle and grounds to help offset the significant maintenance costs of the 50,000-acre Highland estate, while maintaining its status as a sanctuary for the Royal Family.
