Does La Spezia have a beach?

La Spezia's western coastline is very steep and rugged and its long breakwater is close to the sea. Beaches are mostly rocky and pebbled, although there are sandy spots to be found in Levanto and Monterosso.

Technically, the city of La Spezia is a port town and does not have its own beach within the city center. As a major military and commercial hub, its coastline is occupied by docks and marinas. However, it serves as the perfect "base camp" for some of Italy's most beautiful beaches nearby. A short 10- to 20-minute train or bus ride will take you to the pebble beaches of the Cinque Terre (like Monterosso al Mare) or the stunning "Gulf of Poets." To the west, the village of Portovenere offers rocky bathing spots and crystal-clear water, while to the east, Lerici and San Terenzo boast sandy stretches like Venere Azzurra. In 2026, many visitors prefer staying in La Spezia for its better value accommodation and using the frequent ferry or train services to reach the "hidden" coves and beach establishments located just a few miles down the rugged Ligurian coast.

People Also Ask

i am probably a little biased but I think La Spezia is indeed a good base. You have all the amenities of a city (shopping, bars and restaurants) yet only 8 mins away from Riomaggiore by train and on to the rest of the cinque terre. Buses every 15 mins to Lerici or every 30 mins to Portovenere.
