Does the Detroit tunnel take cash?

Cashless Toll and Travel Update The Detroit and Canadian sides of the border are completely cashless. We encourage customers to sign-up for our Nexpress® Program. The process is simple: Travelers can sign up for a Nexpress account here, load their account, and receive a toll discount on every trip.

You can pay the toll with a credit card, debit card, the DWT's proprietary NEXPRESS Card, or their smartphone app. The tunnel no longer accepts cash!

For U.S. citizens, a passport or visa is not required. Instead, a birth certificate and one photo identification card may be used; however, a photo identification card by itself is not enough. For permanent residents of the United States, “Green Cards” may be used in lieu of their passports.
