Heavy rainfall mixed with a rise in temperatures in spring allow insects such as mosquitoes, midges and gnats to flourish. The UK is home to more than 30 types of native mosquito species, some of which bite and cause a nuisance. The most common indoor species of mosquito is called the 'culex pipiens'.
