Does United assign seats before check-in?

With Basic Economy, you'll automatically be assigned a seat before boarding, and you won't be able to change your seat once it's assigned. Advance seat assignments may be available for purchase during booking and up until check-in opens.

As of 2026, United Airlines generally allows passengers in most fare classes to select or be assigned a seat at the time of booking or any time before check-in. If you are flying in United Economy, Economy Plus, or a premium cabin, you can choose your seat through the "My Trips" section of the website or app immediately after purchase. However, for those on a Basic Economy ticket, United does not assign a seat for free until check-in begins 24 hours before departure. Basic Economy travelers who want a specific seat earlier must pay a seat assignment fee. Additionally, if you haven't selected a seat by the time check-in opens, United’s system will automatically assign you one for free based on remaining availability. For families, 2026 policies ensure that children under 12 are seated next to at least one adult on the same reservation at no extra charge, regardless of the ticket type, often handled by the system automatically before the flight.

Emphatically, no. You will likely get assigned a seat during check-in (though you should still skip it if the airline tries to tack on a fee) or, at the very least, at the gate. Again: You don't have to select a seat in order to get a seat. You just might get stuck with a suboptimal one if you choose to skip it.
