As of 2026, the comparison between planes and cars depends heavily on distance and occupancy. On a "per-passenger mile" basis for a long-distance trip, a full commercial flight is often more carbon-efficient than a single person driving a standard gasoline-powered car. However, for short-haul trips (under 500 miles), cars and trains are significantly better. The primary "environmental problem" with planes is that they release emissions high in the atmosphere, creating contrails that have a "multiplying" effect on global warming. While the aviation industry is moving toward Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), a single long-haul flight can still generate more CO2 than some people produce in an entire year of driving an electric vehicle, making flying the most "carbon-intensive" activity an individual can do.
