Herrenchiemsee New Palace, located on an island in Bavaria's Lake Chiemsee, is a massive monument to King Ludwig II's obsession with the "Sun King," Louis XIV. While the palace was never fully completed, its scale is intended to rival and even surpass the Palace of Versailles. The most famous room, the Great Hall of Mirrors, measures 98 meters (321 feet) in length, which is actually longer than the original Hall of Mirrors at Versailles. The palace's garden front spans the entire width of the building, and the interior features 20 grand rooms open to the public that are among the most lavishly decorated in the world, featuring over 2,000 kilograms of gilded stucco and hundreds of sparkling chandeliers. If the palace had been finished according to the original plans, it would have been nearly twice its current size. Today, it remains a high-value day trip from Munich, offering a "fairytale" atmosphere on an idyllic island. Its sheer dimensions and opulent marquetry flooring make it one of the largest and most expensive construction projects of the 19th century.
