Shibuya Station is one of the busiest transportation hubs in the entire world, handling approximately 2.6 to 3.0 million passengers every single day in 2026. It consistently ranks as the second or third busiest station in Japan, usually trailing only Shinjuku Station. The station is a massive labyrinth serving ten different train lines, including JR East (Yamanote Line), Tokyo Metro (Ginza, Hanzomon, Fukutoshin), and private Tokyu and Keio lines. During "rush hour" (8:00–9:30 AM and 5:30–7:30 PM), the density of people is overwhelming for first-time visitors, with thousands of commuters moving in synchronized waves. Outside the station is the famous Shibuya Scramble Crossing, where up to 2,500 people cross the street every time the light turns green. Despite the chaos, the station is incredibly efficient; however, ongoing massive redevelopment projects (scheduled to continue through 2027) mean that exits and transfer paths change frequently, making it a "busy" environment both in terms of foot traffic and physical construction.
