How can schools detect vaping?

Schools in 2026 utilize a combination of sophisticated smart sensors and infrared cameras to combat student vaping. Modern vape detectors, often installed in "privacy-sensitive" areas like bathrooms and locker rooms, use laser scattering technology to detect microscopic aerosol particles. These sensors are specifically tuned to distinguish between water vapor (from a shower or sink) and the chemical compounds in e-cigarettes, such as nicotine or THC. When a certain threshold is reached, the device silently triggers an alert sent directly to staff via mobile apps or two-way radios, often including a timestamp and location. Some higher-end systems also monitor for "acoustic disturbances" (the sound of a vape being activated) or "tamper alerts" if a student tries to cover the device. Additionally, school officials may use hand-held "vape sniffers" during locker inspections. Beyond technology, many schools rely on "behavioral monitoring," looking for sudden changes in student social patterns or frequent requests to leave the classroom to visit the restroom.
