How do Avios work?

Avios is the reward currency of the Club We call them Avios. You collect Avios when you fly, take a holiday, hotel stay or car rental with us plus our wide range of partners. And when you've collected enough, you can spend your Avios for rewards such as flights, upgrades, hotel stays, car hire and more.

Avios is the shared loyalty currency used by the International Airlines Group (IAG), which includes British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, and Vueling, as well as partners like Qatar Airways and Finnair. You earn Avios by flying with these airlines or their oneworld partners, but also through everyday spending on co-branded credit cards, hotel stays, and shopping via the Avios eStore. In 2026, the most effective way to use them is for Reward Flight Saver bookings, which allow you to pay a flat cash fee for taxes and fees plus a fixed amount of Avios for short-haul European flights. You can also use Avios to upgrade a paid cash booking to a higher cabin class, such as from World Traveller Plus to Club World. Because Avios can now be moved instantly and for free between linked accounts (like British Airways and Qatar Airways), the currency has become incredibly flexible, allowing travelers to "pool" their points and redeem them for high-value long-haul redemptions or luxury "Qsuite" experiences.
