To get a refund for the remaining balance on a physical Suica card, you must visit a JR East Ticket Office (known as Midori-no-Madoguchi) at a major JR station in the Tokyo area. You cannot get a Suica refund at non-JR stations or in other cities like Osaka (which uses ICOCA). When you return the card, JR East will refund the remaining balance plus the 500-yen deposit you paid when you first got the card. However, they subtract a 220-yen handling fee from the balance. If your balance is less than 220 yen, you will only receive the 500-yen deposit back (meaning it’s best to spend the card down to zero at a convenience store first to avoid the fee). If you have a "Welcome Suica" (the red tourist card) or a "Pasmo Passport," these are non-refundable and do not have a deposit. For digital Suica cards on an iPhone, the process is more complex and typically requires a Japanese bank account, so it is best to simply spend the remaining digital balance at a store before leaving Japan.
