How do I see available seats on American Airlines?

Seeing what seats are available on a flight on American Airlines is incredibly easy. All you need to do is go to American Airlines website and click on the 'Flight Status & Check-in' tab. On the new page, you need to enter your flight route, date and other details to check the availability of seats.

You can check available seats on American Airlines in several ways, depending on whether you’re looking before booking or after:

1. Before Booking a Flight

  • On the AA Website/App: When you search for a flight and select a fare, you’ll proceed to a seat map page before payment. This shows available seats (in green) and their associated fees (if any).
  • ExpertFlyer: This is a paid third-party service (with a limited free trial) that allows advanced searches for specific seat availability across cabins.

2. After Booking (Managing Your Trip)

  • Online/App: Go to “Manage Trips / Check-in” on AA.com or in the app. Enter your confirmation and last name. You’ll see your current seat and can select “Change seats” to view the available seat map for your flights.
  • During Online Check-in: Check-in opens 24 hours before departure. The seat map will be displayed, and you can often change to any available standard seat for free at that time.

3. At the Airport

  • Self-Service Kiosk: You can view and select from available seats when you check in at the airport kiosk.
  • Gate Agent: Shortly before departure, the gate agent can assign any remaining open seats.

Important Notes on Seat Availability:

  • Basic Economy (BE) Restriction: If you booked a Basic Economy fare, you cannot select a seat in advance for free. You will be assigned a seat at check-in. You can only pay to select a seat if you want one earlier.

You will likely get assigned a seat during check-in (though you should still skip it if the airline tries to tack on a fee) or, at the very least, at the gate. Again: You don't have to select a seat in order to get a seat. You just might get stuck with a suboptimal one if you choose to skip it.

Getting the top levels of priority boarding is reserved for the most frequent flyers, active military members and higher fare class. You can also board early by being an AAdvantage card member. However, if you prefer other airlines, look for other travel cards that offer priority boarding and compare your options.

A standby list allows you to change to a different flight if a seat becomes available. It's an option if you're hoping for an earlier flight or if your flight has been canceled or delayed. Flying standby with us is free and easy, but there's no guarantee that you will get a seat while on a standby list.

Specifically, pick a window seat on the left side of the aircraft. These seats are usually off-center, making leaning up against the side of the plane more comfortable. A bulkhead seat is also a great option because you don't have to worry about anyone reclining into your space.
