You cannot simply "upgrade" an existing Global Entry membership to NEXUS through a button click; you must apply for NEXUS as a new program via the Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP) website. Because NEXUS is a joint program between the U.S. and Canada, the application requires approval from both U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). You will have to pay the $120 fee (effective late 2024/2025) and undergo a new background check. Once conditionally approved, you must attend an interview at a NEXUS Enrollment Center, which are primarily located along the U.S.-Canada border or at Canadian "preclearance" airports. A major benefit of switching in 2026 is that NEXUS includes all the benefits of Global Entry and TSA PreCheck plus expedited entry into Canada by land, air, and sea. Once your NEXUS is approved, it effectively replaces your Global Entry, though your PASSID (membership number) usually stays the same.
