Avoiding crocodiles in Cairns and Tropical North Queensland is a matter of practicing "Crocwise" behavior and respecting the local environment. First and foremost, obey all warning signs; if a sign says crocodiles inhabit the area, believe it. Do not swim in rivers, creeks, or estuaries, and be extremely cautious at beaches, as saltwater crocodiles can and do travel in the ocean. When fishing, always stand at least five meters back from the water's edge and never clean fish or discard scraps near the water, as this attracts them. Avoid regular patterns, such as visiting the same spot at the same time every day, as crocodiles are ambush predators that observe behavior. If you are camping, stay at least 50 meters away from the water's edge. It is also important to be extra vigilant during the breeding season (September to April) and at night when they are most active. For a safe experience, only swim in designated areas like the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon or supervised swimming enclosures that are specifically cleared and monitored for safety.
