Earning points in the Miles & More program (the loyalty scheme for Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, and others) has become more "status-focused" following a 2024-2026 system overhaul. You earn "Miles" for spending and "Points" for status. To earn Miles, you can fly with any of the 40+ airline partners, use a co-branded Miles & More credit card for daily purchases, or shop via their online portal with partners like Agoda or Marriott Bonvoy. To earn Points (which determine your Frequent Traveler or Senator status), you must fly on "Qualifying" flights operated by the Lufthansa Group or co-issuing partners. The number of Points is now based simply on the class of travel and whether the flight is continental or intercontinental, rather than the complex fare-price formulas of the past. For example, a Business Class intercontinental flight earns 200 Points, while an Economy continental flight earns 20 Points, regardless of the ticket's actual cash price.

Ultimately, deciding whether to redeem points rather than pay cash for travel is a personal choice. You'll get more value by using them for high-priced travel experiences. But if you're a budget traveler who just wants to save a few bucks, use your points for that economy flight or low-category hotel redemption.
