Navigating security with a baby requires a bit of extra time and an understanding of the TSA's modified screening rules. First, inform the officer that you are traveling with an infant; you will typically be allowed to carry your baby through the walk-through metal detector (you do not need to separate from them). Your baby's stroller, car seat, and diaper bag must go through the X-ray machine; if the equipment is too large for the belt, an officer will perform a manual inspection. Crucially, parents are allowed to carry more than 3.4 ounces of formula, breast milk, and baby food, as these are considered "medically necessary liquids." However, you must remove them from your bag and declare them for separate screening. TSA officers may test the liquids for explosives by opening the container and waving a test strip over the vapor, but they will never put anything directly into the milk. To make the process smoother, use clear bottles when possible and wear easy-to-remove shoes, as you will still need to follow standard adult screening procedures unless you have TSA PreCheck.
