How do you pay for the MRT in Taiwan?

The machines only accept cash coins but you can always change a note into coins at the station. You may also purchase a ticket by the counter. Please swipe your card or token before taking a ride. To ensure everyone enjoys a comfortable and safe ride, smoking is entirely forbidden in all stations.

Paying for the MRT in Taiwan (notably the Taipei and Kaohsiung Metro systems) is incredibly convenient. The most popular method is using a "Stored Value Card" (IC Card), such as the EasyCard or iPASS. These can be purchased and topped up at any MRT station or convenience store (like 7-Eleven). You simply tap the card at the gate to enter and exit. In 2026, the MRT also supports contactless credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, JCB) and mobile wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay. If you are a one-time visitor, you can purchase a "Single Journey Token" from machines at the station using cash. For those staying several days, "Taipei Fun Passes" or 24/48/72-hour Metro Passes offer unlimited rides for a fixed fee, providing a cost-effective way to explore the city without fumbling for change.
