How do you pay for trains in Glasgow?

You can pay for your ticket with cash or by debit or credit card at any of our 143 staffed station ticket offices. We aim to serve customers within five minutes at peak times, and three minutes at off-peak times, so give yourself enough time to buy a ticket.

Navigating Glasgow's rail network in 2026 is a blend of traditional and modern "tap-and-go" systems. For the ScotRail suburban network, you can purchase tickets via the ScotRail App, at station kiosks, or online. A major update for 2026 is the widespread rollout of contactless bank card payments across the "Glasgow central" gates, similar to London's system. For the Glasgow Subway (the "Clockwork Orange"), you can use a Subway Smartcard, which offers the best "pay-as-you-go" value, or purchase paper tickets for single journeys at £1.85. The Subway is also fully integrated with contactless smartphone payments at the turnstiles. If you are traveling frequently between bus, subway, and train, the ZoneCard remains the most practical choice, allowing unlimited multi-modal travel within specific geographic zones. It is a grounded tip to always "tap in" and "tap out" to ensure you are charged the correct fare, and remember that "Kids for a Quid" deals often require a physical or digital ticket purchased in advance rather than a simple contactless tap.
