How do you visit wineries in Tuscany without a car?

You get the picture—taxi, train, bus, they just don't compare to the freedom of having a car in Tuscany. If you want to see the countryside—at your own pace—stop as often as you like en route for photos, gelato, curiosity—you really need a car.

The famous wine region of Chianti in Tuscany is between Florence, Arezzo, and Siena. The distance from Florence to Chianti is 30 kilometers (20 miles). This takes you to the wine town of Greve, often considered the gateway to Chianti.

There's no reason NOT to rent a car and drive in Tuscany, it's like driving in rural Virginia. Bicycles would only allow you see a small part of Tuscany. There are many tremendous hills there and we've seen plenty of very experienced bikers walking their bikes up some of them.

To reach wineries from there, arrange a taxi or ask wineries to pick you up. If travelling by bus from Florence, one of the options is to reach Greve in Chianti or another town of Chianti that I listed above, and walk from the town to one of the wineries.

The average travel time on the two routes is similar, between 1h 15min and 2 hours of drive depending on traffic. Tuscany is full of unmissable destinations and you can create your own tour visiting some of the most beautiful places here.
