How does access a ride work NYC?

Access-A-Ride provides transportation for people with disabilities whose disability prevents their use of accessible mass transit, public bus, or subway service for some or all trips. Access-A-Ride is operated by private carriers under contract to the City. The current fare for Paratransit/Access-A-Ride is $2.90.

The free buses will go into effect this Sunday, September 24, and include the following: Bx18A/B, B60, M116, Q4, and S46/96. Once the pilot program is completed, Hochul reportedly expects the MTA to extend the free bus service into 2025. There's also a free shuttle bus that takes you around Downtown Manhattan.

Buses are your best option if you are traveling from East to West across the city. If it's a pleasant day try to rent a bike or ride a NYC ferry. You will see more of the city and have fun. NYC has many ride sharing options.

Start in the morning, so you have time for a lunch break and can wrap up before dinnertime. How long the walk takes will, of course, depend on your speed and how long you take for breaks. My journey ended up at about 5 hours, 30 minutes including a few short stops.

If a passenger plans to pay using a contactless credit/debit card or an Oyster Card, they are eligible for the Hopper fare. The Hopper fare allows a rider to transfer from one bus (or tram) to another within an hour of touching your card for the first time. It also gives you unlimited journeys within that time frame.
