A cruise ship "jail" is officially known as a brig. It is not a row of bars like in a movie, but typically a small, windowless, and Spartan room located on the lower decks, away from passenger areas. The brig is used for individuals who pose a physical threat to themselves or others, such as those involved in violent altercations or severe criminal activity. The ship's security team, often comprised of former military or police officers, has the authority to detain you under maritime law. While in the brig, you are under constant surveillance, and your meals are brought to you. For less severe offenses, like extreme public intoxication or minor disputes, the Captain may instead order "cabin arrest," where security is stationed outside your stateroom door. In either case, the ship will typically hand you over to local authorities at the very next port of call and permanently ban you from the cruise line.
