How does luggage work on a Disney cruise?

The luggage allowance for Disney Cruise Line is two suitcases per person. These suitcases will be checked in with the luggage porters at the port and will arrive in your stateroom on the day of embarkation. You will receive two luggage tags per guest in your travel party for this checked baggage prior to setting sail.

Luggage on a Disney Cruise Line (DCL) sailing is managed through a "hands-free" system designed for guest convenience. Approximately five weeks before your sail date, DCL mails you color-coded luggage tags printed with your stateroom number. On embarkation day, you attach these tags to your checked bags and hand them to porters at the cruise terminal. These bags are then screened and delivered directly to your stateroom door by late afternoon. Because your checked luggage may not arrive until 4:00 PM or 5:00 PM, it is essential to keep a carry-on bag containing boarding documents, medications, swimwear, and any immediate essentials. At the end of the cruise, the process reverses: you place your tagged bags in the hallway outside your room on the final night, and the crew whisks them away to be collected in the terminal after you disembark. In 2026, DCL also offers "onboard airline check-in" for select flights, where your bags are taken straight from the ship to the airport, further simplifying the travel experience.

However, that can take a few hours, so you'll want to keep carry-on luggage that includes items such as a swimsuit and sunscreen with you.

The best news about packing is that there is no (reasonable) limit on how much you can bring on a cruise. Most cruise lines “encourage” or “suggest” each passenger to limit luggage to two suitcases, each one less than 50 pounds. In addition, you can also bring carry-on luggage (more on that in a moment).
