How does one get into a hot air balloon?

Hot air balloon baskets are not outfitted with doors and therefore the only way to board the balloon is by going up and over the side of the basket. There is no graceful way to do it! Just up and over.

Entering a hot air balloon is a hands-on process as baskets typically do not have traditional doors to maintain structural integrity. Most balloon baskets feature step-holes or footrests woven into the side of the wicker, which passengers use as a ladder to climb over the edge. You place your foot into the hole, grab the side rails or the internal leather handles, and swing your legs over the rim into the designated passenger compartment. In 2026, many operators offer "easy-access" baskets with swing-open doors or lower entry points for those with limited mobility, but the "climb-in" method remains the standard for most recreational flights. It is important to wait for the pilot’s explicit instruction to enter, as the ground crew must ensure the balloon is sufficiently buoyant and stable before adding the weight of passengers to prevent the basket from tipping or dragging.
